GALLERY - MINI BREAK TO EAST SUSSEX |
We left the hotel at about 9.30am for the 40 minute journey to Battle, about 17 miles north-east of Eastbourne. We were given a very good tour of the grounds of Battle Abbey. That lasted a little over 1 hour and included a report on how the famous battle happened in 1066 and a walk around the interesting grounds and ruins of the Abbey. We separated afterwards for a walk and lunch in the pleasant town of Battle. We then went on to spend 2 hours at the impressive house & gardens at Great Dixter, the family home of the plantsman & gardening writer Chrisopher Lloyd (1920-2006).

| E18M2C | Great Dixter House was a truly interesting place although only a few rooms were open to The Public. The Great Hall was spectacular. @@@ |

| E18M2D | Great Dixter Gardens were a blaze of colour. Those who were keen gardeners loved the place. Even those of us who are not keen on gardening were impressed, not least by the way that parts had (apparently deliberately) been allowed to thicken so much that they appeared quite wild even whilst being ordered. | ![]() |
